A therapy dog is specifically trained to provide affection, comfort, and support to individuals in various environments, such as hospitals, retirement homes, nursing facilities, schools, libraries, hospices, and disaster zones. Unlike assistance dogs, or service dogs which are trained to aid specific individuals with their daily physical needs, therapy dogs are equipped to interact with a diverse range of people, not just their handlers. This takes a well balanced and confident dog.
Dogs undergo thorough testing to ensure they remain calm in various situations, such as when passing by other dogs or when a loud noise occurs, like a bowl dropping on a tiled floor.
